Life of a Live-In Carer

We treat those we care for, those we
work with and those we mentor with dignity and respect.

What makes a good live-in carer?

Being a carer is an occupation that’s often not fully understood. However, many of us will require their services at some (later) stage of our lives. Despite facing a unique set of challenges, carers bring genuine improvements to peoples lives, which is immensely rewarding.

What makes an excellent live-in carer? Live-in carers are a special type of person: selfless, kind and empathetic. Here are just some of the traits that successful carers naturally share:

  • Positivity
  • Patience
  • Tolerance
  • Non-judgmental
  • Compassionate
  • Professional

Carers are motivated by improving the lives of others. They enable individuals by supporting them to live in their own homes, while maintaining their independence.. They enjoy spending quality time with people; talking with them, listening to stories or cherished records, working to really understand them as people and reinforce their sense of self.

They recognize how fundamental home care can be to ensure independence, familiarity, and dignity. This in turn helps the people they care for by reducing feelings of loneliness and in some cases even alleviating symptoms of  chronic medical conditions, such as dementia.

Typical activities in the day of a live-in carer

Live-in carers work with a wide variety of people in diverse environments. The unifying factor is that all clients need support and companionship.

The daily activities of a live-in carer can be split into two categories: practical assistance and personal interaction.

From day one, carers become companions, engaging in conversation, reminiscence and other activities that give the sense of familiarity and inclusion, which in turn prevents or reduces loneliness or depression.

Live-in carers may have downtime at various points throughout the day, or for several hours in the evening, depending on the needs of a client,. This helps them to re-charge and be ready for anything the day might bring. It goes without saying that relevant labor laws are adhered to.

What are the highs and lows?

Being a professional live-in carer comes with its fair share of challenges to be overcome. Therefore carers  need to be patient, understanding and compassionate, even in demanding conditions.

In challenging moments, it’s s comforting for carer’s to know they can count on Domonor’s team for help and advice. While, the reward of knowing  they’ve improved a person’s quality of life far outweighs any challenges.

Becoming a live-in carer is an interesting and highly rewarding process. We seek to be transparent with everyone in the process, to assure total peace of mind for all involved:  carers, clients and families.
